Innovation and Industry

The Innovation and Industry Platform is working to connect healthcare professionals with engineering and technology experts to help develop solutions to unmet healthcare needs.

The Innovation and Industry Platform is dismantling barriers hindering the creation of essential health technologies.

Technology is evolving at a rapid pace. However, in healthcare it often takes significant time for translation into clinical practice. As with important medical discoveries, it can take up to 17 years for just 14% of clinical innovations to be put to use in practice and yet the potential for disruptive technologies to transform patients’ lives is significant.

Clearly, there is room for improvement.

Various barriers exist to ensuring new technologies are made available and used in the health system. Low investment and user involvement, complex regulations, operational silos, lack of the right expertise, and limited clinical engagement are just a few issues.

The Innovation and Industry Platform is not just breaking barriers, it is redefining the landscape of healthcare innovation. By fostering collaboration between stakeholders, the Platform is accelerating the journey from discovery to implementation.

Our Vision

Our Vision

To create connections between technologists, clinicians, patients and carers and share knowledge, practice and opportunities for innovation and translation into clinical practice.

Our Focus

Our Focus

Our Platform focuses on the following areas:

  • Identify barriers to technology translation

We work with stakeholders to understand where technology translation is hindered, and address these roadblocks.

  • Leverage digital connections

We utilise technology-enabled solutions to simplify the process of making the right connections to information, people, and resources, efficiently and when needed.

  • Structured for success

The Platform is structured to make more meaningful connections between both internal and external clinicians, researchers and industry. It enables better efficiency with less duplication of effort and improved identification of unmet healthcare needs.

Our Team

Our growing team includes members from our three partner universities, the Lions Club, South Western Sydney Local Health District, the South West Institute for Robotics and Automation, and the Liverpool, St. George, Prince of Wales, and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

We have a diverse team with backgrounds in biomedical, mechanical and manufacturing engineering, brain injury, rehabilitation, behaviour and disorders, psychiatry, emergency, surgical and clinical services, software development and tech.

We will partner with primary health networks, other advanced health research translation centres, tech startups and scaleup accelerators. Together, we will design innovative solutions that address Australia’s most challenging clinical issues.
