Introduction to HREC Fundamentals

This course has been developed through a collaboration between PRAXIS Australia, SPHERE and Sydney Health Partners. It is an introductory course about research ethics and governance review processes, and some of the important features of clinical trials.

It has been developed for people who are new members of a Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) or research support office. It is designed to assist HREC members to understand and fulfil the very important role they play in ensuring that research is well designed and conducted ethically, with due regard to the rights and safety of research participants.

  • Module 1: An Introduction to Human Research Ethics and Human Research Ethics Committees. This part will introduce participants to the impetus for, and role of, human research ethics review.
  • Module 2: The Values and Principles of Ethical Conduct. This part explains the four values and principles of ethical conduct that guide ethical review under the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007, updated 2018).
  • Module 3: An Introduction to Clinical Trials. This part introduces issues that commonly arise in the ethical review of Clinical Trials, including the assessment of risks and benefits, seeking consent, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

Each part takes approx. 60- 90 minutes to complete.

There is a quiz component to the course to help reinforce the learnings of each module.

This course is exclusive to the staff and partner organisations of Sydney Health Partners and SPHERE. It is subsidised for our partner organisations making the cost to course participants only $100 plus GST for all 3 modules.
