A randomised clinical trial comparing pharmacist-led opioid tapering program to usual care for people with chronic opioid use prior to total knee or hip arthroplasty.
Opioid use prior to arthroplasty is associated with worse outcomes after surgery. Building on a successful pilot study funded by the Avant Foundation (2021) and which was completed in 2023, this study is poised to be the first definitive randomised trial to demonstrate whether opioid tapering prior to surgery reduced the rate of ongoing/persistent use 3-months after surgery, reduces length of hospital stay, and improves patient-reported quality of life and function.
