Introducing our new Communications Manager
SPHERE is pleased to welcome Emma Berthold to the Communications team in the role of Communications Manager.
Emma is a science communicator and digital communications specialist with more than a decade of experience across science, health, research, higher education and government settings.
Before joining SPHERE, she worked with the Australian Academy of Science, where she edited policy reports, wrote science news stories and helped communicate complex research through digital content, publications and campaigns.
She also worked with the ANU College of Science before establishing her own science writing and editing business, supporting clients across government, universities, research organisations and professional societies.
“I enjoy the challenge of getting across a complex topic quickly, working with researchers and subject matter experts, and then finding the clearest way to communicate it,” Emma said.
Emma was drawn to SPHERE because of the way it connects health research with patient care and the many systems involved in translating evidence into practice.
“I’m really interested in the whole translational healthcare journey, from research and clinical innovation through to changing practice and improving healthcare,” she said.
In her role, Emma will have a particular focus on strengthening SPHERE’s digital communications, including its website, social media channels and online engagement.
She will work with researchers and partners to communicate their work clearly, reach relevant audiences and build connections that can support collaboration, funding and impact.
“There is so much valuable research, innovation and education happening across SPHERE,” Emma said.
“I’m looking forward to bringing my experience in research communication, digital content and storytelling to the role, while learning more about how research is translated into better healthcare in Australia.”
Outside of work, Emma enjoys travelling, reformer Pilates, playing the piano, learning Japanese and taking long nature walks to look for wildlife, especially birds.
She also enjoys relaxing at home with her husband and their cat, Spooky, who is “afraid of everyone and everything, but always wants to curl up in the sunshine in whatever room we’re in”.
