Celebrating five years of impact in cancer research
Researchers, clinicians and partners came together on 30 April to mark a major milestone for the SPHERE Cancer Clinical Academic Group (CAG): the conclusion of the Cancer Institute NSW Capacity Building Grant (2021–2026).
Held at The Surry Rooftop, Rydges Sydney Central, the End-of-Grant Showcase recognised five years of collaboration, innovation and tangible progress in cancer research and care.
Opening the evening, Tracey O'Brien AM, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Cancer Officer of Cancer Institute NSW, reflected on the importance of investing in people and partnerships to drive meaningful change across the health system.
The event also acknowledged the leadership behind the program’s success. Geoff Delaney AM, Director of the Cancer CAG, and Deputy Director Natalie Taylor were recognised for their stewardship, alongside former Director Phoebe Phillips, whose early contributions helped establish the program. Chair Carolyn Mazariego brought energy and insight to the evening, guiding a program that balanced reflection with forward momentum.
A highlight of the showcase was the presentations from SPHERE Cancer CAG Research Fellows and PhD students, who shared the depth and diversity of work supported by the grant. Their research demonstrated not only scientific excellence, but a clear focus on improving patient outcomes.
The event also created space for meaningful connection, with attendees engaging in discussion, strengthening collaborations and reflecting on what has been achieved over the past five years.
While the grant period has concluded, the impact of this work continues, shaping future research, strengthening capability, and improving cancer care across the partnership.
