2024 PhD and ECR Cancer Career Pathway

The 10th  September saw a group of accomplished researchers (dubbed ‘mentors’ for the day) come together to contribute to a successful PhD & ECR Cancer Career Pathway workshop.

PhD candidates and Early Career researchers from across Maridulu Budyari Gumal, the Sydney Partnership for Health, Education, Research, and Enterprise (SPHERE) Cancer Clinical Theme network and beyond were given the unique opportunity to not only see presentations, but personally engage with experienced researchers from academia, clinical-research, government and policy, industry, and entrepreneurship.

Our stellar line up included Prof Andrew Milat, Prof Anna DeFazio, Dr Abhijit Pal, Dr Kevin Lynch, Dr Julie-Ince Demetriou, Dr Melina Georgousakis, Prof Nehmat Houssami, A/Prof Orin Chisholm,  Prof Peter Gunning, Dr Sandra Rickards, A/Prof Thomas Cox, and Dr Zahra Shahabi Kargar with SPHERE Cancer CAG’s very own Senior Research Fellow Dr Joanna Fardell facilitating for the day.

The event not only fostered a ‘bringing together of people,’ but a sharing of authentic, candid, and practical insights into navigating the ever-changing and at times perilous journey of a post PhD career. Attendees had the privilege to hear directly from individuals who have a wealth of experience in life post PhD, steering on and off course only to find their way home- leaving a message of hope, inspiration, and a potential roadmap to what the future may hold.

The SPHERE Cancer Clinical Theme would like to thank all those who committed to attending and all the ‘mentors’ who invested their effort and time to making this day a success.

The testimonials from some of our attendees highlight the workshop’s impact:

“The workshop offers a unique one-day opportunity to explore diverse career trajectories in a transparent and engaging way. Additionally, we received personalised feedback from mentors with experience in our field of interest to maximise our career potential.”

“Attending the workshop was very beneficial as it offered valuable insights from experienced professionals. Listening to their journeys and learning from their advice provided me with practical strategies and tips that I can use to shape my own career. Beyond the knowledge shared, the event also created a great networking opportunity.”

We look forward to offering this again in 2025, so watch this space!
