Metabolic syndrome and micronutrient status pre-conception, in pregnancy and beyond

11am - 12pm

Professor Claire Roberts from Matthew Flinders University directs the Pregnancy Health and Beyond Laboratory (PHaB Lab) in the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute.

Her research spans cellular and molecular biology in the placenta, genetic and modifiable risk factors for pregnancy complications and long-term health in mothers and their children. She has generated large human pregnancy cohorts since 2005 that aimed to identify early pregnancy risk factors for pregnancy complications. Follow up studies in women and children seek to identify molecular and modifiable factors to ameliorate future risk.

She was PI in a NIH NICHD Human Placenta Project Grant for which her team generated multi-omic data in placenta and maternal blood across gestation. Professor Robers takes a life course approach to women's health based on the premise that health in pregnancy foreshadows future health or chronic disease for both mothers and children.

This identifies young families for whom early prevention strategies will have most benefit at a time when mothers are most likely to feel empowered to take an active role in promoting their own and their family's health.

A light lunch will follow.
