Co-researcher training with young people with intellectual disability – An inclusive approach to research

Maridulu Budyari Gumal, the Sydney Partnership for Health, Education, Research and Enterprise (SPHERE) Translational Research Fellowship Scheme (TRFS) recipient, Laurel Mimmo, is working with two young people with intellectual disability to learn about participatory research methods to support her doctoral research. Together Matt, Maya and Laurel are testing out different research methods to decide which methods will best enable children with intellectual disability in hospital to express what is a good experience of hospital care.

In our latest news, we are pleased to announce that Ms Amanda Larkin, Chief Executive South Western Sydney Local Health District will be taking over as the Chair of SPHERE Council at the August 2020 meeting. Professor Ian Jacobs, Vice Chancellor and President of UNSW will be stepping down from the Chair after 4 years of outstanding leadership. We thank Professor Jacobs for his vision, expertise, generosity, energy and great poise in guiding the formation and development of our academic health science partnership. We look forward to Ms Larkin leading us into the next exciting phase of our partnership.

Reaching those who need it most with a COVID-19 message they can understand and act upon

Maridul Budyari Gumal has joined forces with the NSW Multicultural Health Communication Service in consultation with NSW Health to create a series of 43 fact sheets containing medical advice and instructions covering Arthritis, Asthma, Cardiovascular Health, Diabetes and Stroke translated into Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Greek, Italian, Samoan, Tamil, Tongan and Vietnamese.
